Fairfield Horseshoe
A classic mountain day in the South Lakeland from Ambleside. Summit no fewer than eight Wainwright fells as you tour around this fabulous route, looking down into six valleys along the way!
Your guide ensures you take inNab Scar (Wainwright no. 1), a lesser-known top to tick, as you work your way up towards Heron Pike (no. 2). From there, the way is undulating to reachGreat Rigg (no. 3), before a final push northwards to Fairfield summit (no 4). The main climbing is at the start of the route, which is indeed the case with many horseshoe routes: as the saying goes 'Once you are up, you are up!' The views down into Grisedale valley above Patterdale and across to St Sunday Crag are fabulous.
Turning gradually in a more southerly direction you look steeply down into the aptly named Deepdale, then there are views into Dovedale as you tick off Hart Crag (Wainwright no.5), and Dove Crag (no.6). Finally, during the descent towards Ambleside, you reach High Pike (no.7) andLow Pike (no.8), completing a memorable haul of eight summits in one day!
This route is a long day out, and although it's less strenuous than the Kentmere Horseshoe, we would still like our walkers to have good experience in the Lakeland Fells, and be comfortable on tricky terrain before embarking on this route.

Contact us to discuss / bookThis is the most amazing walk I've been on – stunning views and a great sense of achievement. Our guides could not have been more encouraging and informative.
We approached this with some trepidation as it's a long day out, but after careful discussion with Nic and her team we devised a plan that would have contingency. This wasn't needed in the end and we nailed it! I loved every minute and the guide was knowledgeable and encouraging. Would recommend.
