Helvellyn via Swirral Edge – a Taste of the Edges
An ascent of Helvellyn via Swirral Edge, the easier of the two edges, provides a great introduction to scrambling and exposure. England's third highest mountain gives 360° panoramic views on a clear day.
Working our way up to the famous Red Tarn enjoying the splendour of the Red Tarn Bowl under the flanks of Helvellyn, our journey takes us along, up and over Swirral Edge to summit Helvellyn. We then descend via Helvellyn Lower Man into Kepple Cove past Greenside Mines.
The charm of Helvellyn is the surprise view from the summit. This can be shrouded in cloud, but many days you can watch it rise and fall revealing extraordinary views over the Lake District mountains, before disappearing in seconds. Clouds can roll like waterfalls over Striding and Swirral Edges, too – the surprise awaits you, and you can never tell until you reach the top!
On a clear day, 360° views of the Lake District fells can leave you speechless.
Although easier than Striding Edge, this still requires mountain confidence and some scrambling to reach the summit.

Nic was a fantastic guide in beautiful countryside. She showed us routes that were off the beaten track and kept us entertained throughout. Many thanks, loved it!
I have been to Red Tarn several times, but circumstances always meant I didn't get to the top. With expert guidance we finally got to the top via Swirral Edge – challenging but doable with a bit of scrambling and help from our guides. Wonderful views this time.
