SCOTTISH MOUNTAIN DAYS
Head over the border into the Scottish Hills, with our guide Bryony, who has taken Hiking Highs to her new home near Pitlochry
Your Scottish guide, Bryony has selected 2 fabulous Scottish mountain hikes ofr you to choose from. Each hike can be booked on a bespoke basis, similar to our other hikes in the Lake District.
Ben Vrachie:
- Distance: 10.2km / 6.25 miles option to extend another 7km
- Ascent: 780m
- Time: 3.5 - 4.5 hours or 6 hours on the longer route
Ben Vrackie (or Ben y Vrackie) is a popular 841-metre (2,757 ft) Corbett mountain located 1 mile north of Pitlochry in Highland Perthshire, Scotland. Known as the “speckled mountain” and comes from a time when white quartz rocks were scattered across its slopes. It’s a steady climb up from the car park through Moulin Burn before passing Loch a’Choire and onto the steepest part up to the summit of Ben Vrackie.
From the summit the views are superb, taking in the panorama up the strath towards Blair Atholl as well as down below Pitlochry. The three summits of Beinn a Ghlò look particularly fine, with the Cairngorms beyond. On the return we can also tick off Meall na h-Aodainn Moire 633m before dropping back down to Pitlochry.
For those wishing a longer walk we can head down the Bealach Walk across the lower slopes of Ben Vrackie and onto Killiecrankie before returning to Pitlochry alongside a sheltered path by the River Garry.
Cairngorm Plateau & Ben Macdui:
- Distance: 11 - 17.5 km
- Ascent: 799m - 971m
- Time: 6 - 8.5 hours
Full Route:
Starting from the Ski Centre we head up Windy Ridge (very apptly named!) up to the summit of Cairn Gorm 1,245m, take a breath and enjoy 360-degree views of the Scottish Highlands, including prominent peaks within the Cairngorm range like Ben Macdui, Braeriach, Cairn Toul, and Sgòr Gaoith. We continue along the ridge to Stob Coire an t-Sneachda 1,176m and then onto the Macdui plateau with great views over Sròn na Lairige across the Lairig Ghru. Heading past Lochan Buidhe and up to the summit of Ben Macdui 1,309m 2nd highest mountain in the UK. From the summit we backtrack a little onto the plateau before heading around the base of Cairn Lochan, as we descend we’ll get to enjoy the dramatic cliff scenery of the northern corries before returning back to the ski centre.
Shorter options:
We can cut out Ben Macdui and just do the ridge walk from Cairn Gorm over to Stob Coire an t-Sneachda - Cairn Lochan and back to the Ski Centre.
Meall Nan Tarmachan Horseshoe:
- Distance: 15km (can reduce to 13km though by not doing Creag Na Caillich)
- Ascent: 983m
- Time: 7 hours
The walk begins from the Ben Lawers Car Park. As we climb there are stunning views to the right of the nearby Ben Lawers range looking very fine across the deep trough of Lochan na Lairige.
We reach the summit of Munro Meall Nan Tarmachan 1,044m it’s a great viewpoint, with the Lawers range to the east, Loch Tay south, the Glen Lyon ranges to the north. From here we begin our journey to traverse the rocky, winding Tarmachan ridge - stretching away to the southwest - is not to be missed!
The next objective is the sharply pointed peak of Meall Garbh (which means Rough Lump). Passing a tiny lochan - with a larger one down to the right before we climb up towards the tiny summit of Meall Garbh 1,026m.
Continuing to Beinn an Eachan 1,000m which has a tiny summit cairn reveals a fine view down Glen Lochay. We keep walking along the ridge to include the final top - Creag na Caillich 914m.
From here we take care as the descent is a little rough, boggy but we soon hit the old quarry track and return back to the car park.
