Fairfield Horseshoe

A classic horseshoe day out in the South Lakeland Fells. Summit 8 Wainwright fells as you tour around this fabulous mountain route, looking down into 6 valleys along the way.

Reach 8 peaks in 1 day and complete a classic Mountain Day from Ambleside.

Your guide will ensure you tick Nab Scar (Wainwright No 1), a lesser known top to tick as your work your way up towards Heron Pike (Wainwright No 2). From there the relief is undulating to get to Great Rigg (Wainwright No 3) and a final push northwards to Fairfield Summit (Wainwright No 4). The main climbing is at the start of the route, which is indeed the case with many horseshoe routes, the saying goes 'Once you are up, you are up'! Views down into Grisedale Valley about Patterdale and across to St Sunday crag are fabulous.

Turning gradually more southerly you will look down steeply into Deepdale, then Dovedale as you pass and tick Hart Crag (No5), and Dove crag (No6), and finally during the descent towards Ambleside, you will pass High Pike (No7) & Low Pike (No8), to complete your 8 summits of the day.

This route is a long day out, although less strenuous than the Kentmere Horseshoe, we would still like our walkers to have good experience in the Lakeland Fells, and comfortable on tricky terrain before embarking on this route.
