High Street & Kidsty Pike incl. Ullswater & Haweswater

Head up onto the High Street Roman Road for views down into Haweswater with glimpses of red deer below in the valley of Riggindale.

Our route leads from the sleepy hamlet of Hartsop, steeply up onto The Knott, before heading south to High Street summit where we look over to the deep and dark Blea Water. High Street is the first of the day's three Wainwrights.

We continue to Kidsty Pike (Wainwright no. 2), for views down to the Haweswater reservoir and across to the Shap Fells. This is the highest point on the Coast-to-Coast National Walking Route. Next door to this we can bag Rampsgill Head (Wainwright no. 3) before returning under The Knott and back to the valley floor.

If time and weather permit, we can extend by another kilometre to catch glimpses of Angle Tarn on the descent. This route can be extended down to Haweswater Reservoir or across to Place Fell for speedy hikers.

High Street summit is steeped in Roman history, with chariot racing up on the mountains and the transportation of goods from Galava Gate Fort in Ambleside to Brocavum Fort near Penrith – high above the danger of ambush on the forested valley floor.
