We return via the same route, but from this direction you can appreciate the views towards the North Lakes, Blencathra and Skiddaw, and on a very clear day as far as the Solway Firth and maybe the Scottish coast!
The charm of Helvellyn is the surprise views from the summit. This can be shrouded in cloud, but many days you can watch it rise and fall revealing extraordinary views over the Lake District mountains, before disappearing in secords, clouds can roll like waterfalls over Striding and Swirral Edges too, the surprise awaits you, and you can never tell until you reach the top! On a clear day 360' views of the Lake District mountains can leave you speachless.
This route can be extended to included Raise and The Lake District Ski Sclub ski tow on the descent for added interest.

This route is my favourite way to experience the Helvellyn summit. The panoramic views are stupendous and along the way you can see your full footsteps from Glenridding. Awesome and not the poor cousin of doing the edges at all.
